Scottish Renewables Festival Launch 2010

Scottish Renewables, the leading green energy trade body, has today launched the Scottish Renewables Festival 2010. The week-long festival, which is in its second year, runs from Saturday 5 to Sunday 13 June and will see renewable projects across the country open their doors to the public.

It’s a chance to get up close to some of Scotland’s most familiar sights such as wind farms and hydro power schemes as well as learn about the latest renewable technologies which are rarely opened to the general public.

With 15 sites taking part in the Festival and more still to be confirmed, Festival 2010 looks set to build on last year’s success. The first major sites to be opened in the Festival’s first weekend are Black Hill Wind Farm near Duns and The Fintry Renewable Energy Show, followed by Steven’s Croft biomass power station near Lockerbie, Dalry Community Wind Farm, Pitlochry Power Station, WWF Dunkeld, RSPB Mersehead and many more.

The open days promise to be packed with fun family events, tours, presentations and exhibitions for visitors to find out more about renewable energy.

No matter where you are in Scotland or whether it’s hydro, solar, tidal, biomass or wind power you are interested in there is something for everyone on this year’s festival line-up.

Niall Stuart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The Scottish Renewables Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate Scotland’s incredible successes in renewables. We produce over 40 per cent of all renewable electricity in the UK, are home to Europe’s biggest wind farm, and leading the world in the development of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.

“As a result, more and more communities are looking to renewables to power their economies and the sector will create tens of thousands of highly paid and highly skilled jobs across the country over the coming years.

“The week is a chance to visit some of the leading projects around the country, learn more about this fast growing and dynamic sector, and find out how you can help support the growth of clean energy in homes, businesses and communities around Scotland.”

Richard Wilcox, Head of Renewable Finance at The Co-operative Bank, who are sponsoring this year’s festival said: "There are excellent opportunities for Scotland to remain at the forefront of renewable energy.

"That is a core reason why we recently created a dedicated team to support growth of projects in the region and ring fenced £200m specially for renewable energy, the majority of which will go to Scottish projects."
